The following is a guest blog by Dr. Angela Prestia about her new book (the first of its kind) on becoming a CNO.
Becoming the CNO: Science, The Stories, The Truth.
Angela S. Prestia PhD MSN RN NE-BC
As a novice nurse leader, I could have only hoped for a book that would have helped me understand myself and the professional journey ahead of me. So, seeing none, I have created one for you – a roadmap that will guide you as you aspire to be or are beginning to become a Chief Nursing Officer.
Becoming the CNO: The Science, The Story, The Truth is the culmination of my lived experiences and the gaps in my knowledge that led me to learn more through research. I had a strong desire to create a comprehensive, easy-to-read, honest account of what it takes to become, sustain, and thrive as a nurse executive. The book includes critical elements for success, situations to reflect upon, tools for your use, and some pitfalls to avoid. The book is not written as a textbook. Instead, it takes you on a journey beginning with awareness of self and the competencies you will need as a nurse executive. It introduces you to The Covenant, emphasizes the importance of connections, provides expertise on topics no one ever discusses and culminates with the understanding that moving on is expected as learning never ends. I share actual stories from my own career as well as those of wise colleagues. I think you will find them interesting. More importantly, I hope you recognize the honesty and generous spirit with which they are presented so that you can succeed.
As I progressed through my career in nursing leadership. I needed sage advice and evidence-based guidance to make sense of the situations and challenges I was experiencing. I hope you will find this book to be the one volume that you refer to time and again, as you aspire to, attain, and thrive in this role.
